False claims about the Êzîdî people have circulated for centuries. The most common ones are corrected here — in depth and with sources in the wiki.
“Êzîdîs worship the devil.”
Tawûsî Melek, the Peacock Angel, is the first and highest of the Seven Angels — the mediator of the Creator, Xwedê. He has nothing to do with the devil; in Êzdayetî, evil has no power of its own. This centuries-old defamation served to justify 74 persecutions (Fermans).
“The ‘Black Book’ (Meshaf Reş) contains the secret teachings of the Êzîdîs.”
According to current research, the alleged “holy books” Meshaf Reş and Kitêba Cilwe are forgeries from the circle of a manuscript dealer around 1900. The true Êzîdî tradition is oral: the Qewl hymns.
“Yezidism is an offshoot of Islam.”
Êzdayetî is an independent, monotheistic religion with very old Mesopotamian-Iranian roots — not an offshoot of Islam, Christianity or any other religion.

Who are the Êzîdî (Yazidi)?
The Êzîdî (also Eziden, Yeziden, Jesiden, Yazidi) are an independent ethno-religious community with roots in Mesopotamia. Their religion, Êzdayetî, is monotheistic and one of the oldest in the region — not an offshoot of any other religion.
Do the Êzîdî believe in the devil?
No. That is a widespread misrepresentation. The Êzîdî venerate Tawûsî Melek, the Peacock Angel — the first and highest of the seven angels and intermediary of the Creator Xwedê. Tawûsî Melek is in no way equated with the devil, Iblis or evil; that equation stems from orientalist misinterpretations.
How old is the Êzîdî religion?
Êzdayetî has very ancient roots reaching back into pre-Islamic, ancient Mesopotamian and ancient Iranian traditions. In its present form it was shaped, among others, by Şêx Adî ibn Musafir (12th century). Exact dating is debated in scholarship.
Where do the Êzîdî live today?
The historic heartland is Şingal (Sinjar) and Şêxan in northern Iraq with the sanctuary of Lalîş. Large diaspora communities exist in Germany (the largest worldwide), Armenia, Georgia, Russia, Sweden, France and other countries — many after flight and genocides.
What was the 2014 genocide?
In 2014 the terrorist militia Daesh (ISIS) committed genocide against the Êzîdî in Şingal: thousands were murdered, women and children enslaved. It was the 74th persecution (Ferman) in Êzîdî history. The genocide is internationally recognized many times over.
What is Êzdîkî?
Êzdîkî denotes the language, i.e. the northern Kurdish (Kurmancî) dialect, as well as the sacred language and script of the Êzîdî. Êzdîxan documents grammar, vocabulary and the original Êzîdî alphabet — and is developing a free learning app.
